For more than five decades, Michael Dillon has filmed adventures and expeditions in some of the most remote and challenging places on Earth—from the Himalayas and the Andes to Antarctica, the Arctic, Africa and the Pacific.
A defining part of his career has been his long-standing collaboration with Sir Edmund Hillary. Dillon made seven documentaries connected with the legendary mountaineer, including From the Ocean to the Sky, Beyond Everest and Hillary: Ocean to Sky.
In 1984, he filmed the first Australian ascent of Mount Everest, completed without supplemental oxygen via the demanding White Limbo route on the North Face. He later conceived and filmed Tim Macartney-Snape’s extraordinary journey to climb Everest starting from sea level. His film Everest: Sea to Summit (1990) went on to win eight major awards at international mountain film festivals.
Dillon’s career encompasses an extensive body of expedition and documentary filmmaking. His work has received prestigious international awards for cinematography, directing, producing and screenwriting, as well as two nominations for the American Emmy Awards.
In 2004, Michael Dillon was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) in recognition of his outstanding contribution to the Australian film industry and adventure filmmaking. He is also a founding member of the Australian Himalayan Foundation and a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society.
In 2022, the International Alliance for Mountain Film awarded Michael Dillon its Grand Prize for Lifetime Achievement, recognising his outstanding contribution to mountain cinema worldwide.
Among his most recent works is The Great White Whale (2023), a compelling account of the daring Australian expeditions to remote Heard Island and the ascent of Big Ben, its ice-covered active volcano. In 2024, the film won the Grand Prize at Bansko Film Fest.
With more than half a century behind the camera, Michael Dillon continues to preserve through film the stories of some of the most remarkable adventures and expeditions of our time.
