When Slovak scientist and mother Lucia Janicova discovers that no Slovak woman has ever climbed Mount Everest, she sees it as a symbol of the deep gender inequality that has shaped her society and her own life. Determined to break those barriers, she sets out to stand atop the world, risking everything while balancing her love for her young daughter with the dangers of the mountain.
As her journey unfolds, we learn more about Lucia’s past, marked by abuse, rape, and a difficult childhood, and how she transforms that pain into the strength to rise.
The voice of Misaloangma, the Tibetan Mother Goddess of Everest, weaves through the film as a spiritual counterpoint, guiding Lucia’s path from suffering toward transcendence.
Blending stunning, dramatic actuality from the world’s highest slopes with intimate, authentic footage from the ascent, Mother’s Peak captures both the grandeur of the mountain and the fragility of the human spirit. Combined with archive material and poetic animation, the film becomes a meditation on resilience, motherhood, and the will to overcome, a story of one woman’s climb to the top of the world and the inner summit she must reach to get there.
