“The forecaster” ( USA, 2015, Greg Hackett, 4’)

What does it mean to be a responsible backcountry skier? With more people backcountry skiing than ever before, the cost of our decisions are no longer borne by ourselves alone. They impact our friends, our families and our communities. One of the most experienced avalanche forecasters in America, Drew Hardesty, is an eloquent voice for the need of a new set of backcountry ethics: ones that protect access to backcountry skiing and have the potential to save lives. In this profile, we follow Drew through an ordinary day at the Utah Avalanche Center, and come to understand what it means to truly honor consequence in avalanche terrain.
