Andrej is a true icon in the world of alpinism, celebrated for his extraordinary achievements, including:
Pioneering Ascents: He was part of the first Himalayan ascent of Gasherbrum I in 1977 via a new route and became one of the first Slovenians to summit Mount Everest in 1979 on the challenging West Ridge Direct.
Andrej has summited six other peaks over 8,000 meters, including Kangchenjunga, Broad Peak, and Dhaulagiri. Notably, he was awarded the first-ever Piolet d’Or for his alpine-style ascent of the south ridge of Kangchenjunga in 1991.

Innovative Climbing Style: He has consistently pushed the boundaries of alpine-style climbing, favoring new routes and pure ascents, thereby shaping the standards of modern mountaineering.
Over his 45-year career, Andrej has led more than 20 expeditions to the Himalayas and has made significant first ascents of several seven-thousanders, solidifying his legacy in the climbing community.
In 2018, he was honored with the Piolet d'Or Lifetime Achievement Award, recognizing his remarkable contributions to the sport and his enduring influence on future generations of climbers.
