“Researchers at the End of the World" tells the story of life in Antarctica through the eyes of the scientists who are part of the 33rd Antarctic expedition on Livingston Island. In the year of the highest solar activity, it is crucial to observe how the glaciers react and how conditions change in this border zone between the ocean and the ice. To this end, the filmmakers even venture into the crevasses of the glaciers to accompany the researchers as they take the necessary measurements. Studying glaciers is extremely important, but not always possible. That's why scientists must use all their imagination and expertise to overcome the extreme conditions that hinder them. Many seabirds travel hundreds of thousands of kilometers to lay their eggs among the ice, and scientists want to understand why they do so. The film reveals many fascinating details about life amid the ice. Microbiologists are trying to learn more about the microscopic world — the types of bacteria inhabiting the waters and shores of Antarctica. In studying the smallest organisms, they encounter some of the largest on the planet. Lichens, which are part of the extremely sparse plant life on Livingston, turn out to synthesize substances that offer hope for treating neurodegenerative diseases.
